Recovery Prayer

When you are gobsmacked by a negative emotion, you need a tool box to help you recover. I have used this method when I’m hit with a negative surprise, a trigger, or when it sneaks up on me over a longer period of time. This prayer method is from the Life Model Workbook, Belonging.

Whatever the issue, if you are upset, you are operating from the back part of your brain. This is where the fear and the anger are sourced. Speak out loud, if at all possible.

  • First you need to tell God what upset you.  

  • What feels threatening or unfair about the situation?

  • If you’re still anxious or angry after about 5 minutes, tell God what is sad about the situation.

  • Tell God how your body is feeling. (There are neural pathways throughout your body that need to be recognized.)

  • Ask God to give you shelter. Ask God where He sees you were hurt the most.

  • Ask him to show you what He sees about the situation.

  • Find something to thank God for and share your longings with him.
